Beginner Long Road Question (simple)

At the beginning of the long road (and subsequent chords) Ed is holding a D chord. Is he just plucking the 5th and 4th strings in a DDUUDU fashion before playing the chord through?

He is just hitting the open d note on the d string (fourth fret).

Yeah, I'm just hearing the 4th string being hit a few times.
