Pain in my hand...

I've been playing guitar for about 4 months so i'm still a bit of a beginer and every now and then i get pain in my right hand(i strum with it but I am a lefty) between my thumb and finger. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with how i'm holding my guitar but maybe I sometimes hold the pick to tight I'm not sure...

Have any of you had any similar troubles or anything you can recomend to prevent the pain or treat it?

I used to get pains in my fingers while playing. But it was more like a stiffness and I'm not too sure if it is the same thing. I went to the doctors and he told me to do some hand exercises before I played anything or typed for periods of time etc. Something like this:

But it worked for me and I no longer have any problems. But if the pain continues I would have a little chat with your doctor!
