Are you thinking of mic'ing your amp, or going direct? If you've got a good amp that you can crank to its optimal volume, by all means, mic it. Otherwise, get yourself a POD. Beyond that, I always tell everyone to get a standalone recorder, like a Tascam, Yamaha, Boss, Zoom, Roland VS, even Fostex are decent these days. So much less stuffing around than with software programs. There are no hardware conflicts, no latency issues and it's all in one box you can take anywhere with you. Even if you want to edit with your computer later on, most all of them now come with a USB port and built-in CD burner.
