like t hat
but that might just be the bak of the guitar
I have also wondered what those (usually black) soundhole covers were. Maybe it's to keep all the sound in for the pickup to pickup? That seems plausible.
I miss you already, I miss you all day
They're there because when you are miking a guitar on stage, an acoustic helps produce a lot of feedback. If you cover the hole with a vented cover, it helps reduce it, even with internal pickups in the guitar.

I used one in an acoustic/electric Martin for a few years, and it worked MIRACLES for feedback from the monitors. It prevents the monitor's sound from entering the soundhole and resonating in the guitar, which causes feedback. I would recommend one to anybody playing a full-size acoustic/electric with some form of bridge/piezo pickup.
*Note: Will not work with the small-soundhole Martins (auditorium, etc). Also will not work well with guitars that have internal mics as part of their pickup system. Like Bob said, can help mic'ed guitars on stage, but it will affect the way the guitar projects into the mic.
