flatwound strings

i saw in the riot act studio notes that Ed uses flatwound strings alot
is this accurate and what is the difference between normal and flatwound strings?

    i have flatwound strings for my fretless bass, but i have no idea y he would use flatwound strings on an electric guitar, tho they could possibly b the strings he uses on his accoustic????

    I have flat wounds on a fretted bass (my '62 reissue jazz), and on a Les Paul I own. They have a tendancy to take all the highs out of it. Lots of low end.

    Flatwounds are a different sound. A lot of guys in the 6s used them, most notably The Beatles. They have more of a "plunky" type of sound, and require a lot of getting used to IMO.
