i was planning on putting all my mics into the mixing board, playing live and then running a cable from the board (run it from the main output) to the 4-track

im pretty sure that can be done, i just wanna make sure and what cable i will need

thanks

  • Should be able to do a stereo send, left to one track and right to the other track.

  • All Those Yesterdays is correct.

i did the same thing before i got a big ass hard disk recorder, with surprisingly good results. (good mics needed)

i have run a full drum mics set (7) into a more or less same desk with 12 channels, with guitars (2), bass, vox, and backing vox into the 8 track Fostex multitrack i have, one left, one right - from the stereo sends on the mixer.

not the most proffessional approach but you can get away with good recordings if try out moving mics around, and swaping them around too.

experimentation is the key if you're on a budget set up. dont be afraid if trying out different mics on the kick / snare / hihats.

i used standard quality jack to jacks

then, because the Multitrack had a hard disk inside it, i could record that out to a mini disc via an optical out on the multitrack.
giving it a kind of compression.

    play on!

  • what cables should i use

a lelft right to a single normal jack
or left right to left right?

    thanks

  • a left right to a single normal jack,

although, i would use 2 channels of the multitrack and pan left and right. so, 2 jack to jack cables from the mixer into 2 inputs on your tape machine.

shame it aint got direct outs from the channels and switchable pre-post aux pots. but then again i work for allen and heath so i guess in some ways compared to some people im used to a kind of luxury haha

That recorder appears to only record one mono track at a time, so there's no advantage to using a stereo signal from the mixer. You can use a "Y" cable that puts the stereo output of the board into a mono signal at the recorder, or just take the left output of the board into the recorder. Either way, you use standard 1/4" cable, the same as a guitar cable.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.
  • well i researched quite a bit and realized that digital recording is cheaper and easier at times. Even though im usually "anti digital" and i would much rather record on tape i decided to let that go. Im still going to record my band live through the mixing board and into the computer and not do much editing, because i like it more "raw". Im going to get the mAudio firewire audiofile for 169$. I still want to record in stereo and this has stereo inputs.

i just wanted to make sure that i can run the stereo out from my board to the stereo in on that.

also on a mixer board if i change, say the 1st input with guitar, to the left chanell will it record on the left chanell?

thanks! im on my way to my little recording studio!
