Yeah, classic's are fine mid-level LP's - it should serve you well.
Throw some nice BurstBucker's in there and it'll really scream.

  • Hey Ian, I have heard a lot about the Burstbuckers and I've never had a guitar with them. I have even had real PAF's,(yeh, I still rue the day I sold that guitar).
How do you think the Bbuckers sound in comparison to other Gibson PU's and/or Duncan Antiquity pickups or others.

I learned on a LP Studio. It was ruined in a flood and I haven't picked one up since. I should go and start looking again.

That's what I should do. I've got the Classic and the Studio, and I've found I like the pickups a lot better in the Studio.

My studio was the first really nice thing I bought as far as music was concerned. Still have it, play it, love it.

This guy's jealous. :D Did you try out the new LP Traditionals by any chance? Those are very intriguing... if I had the money to seriously be looking at a Gibson I'd check those out, just judging from specs and price alone.

The Traditional's that I tried seemed a bit heavier...

BurstBuckers are a bit more open sounding and have a bit more zing than the other Gibson Pickups.
Here you go, from back in November (comparison): http://forums.pearljam.com/showpost.php?p=4933704&postcount=2
The BB's/Antiquity are both said to be modeled after the PAF humbuckers Seth E. Lover designed in 1955.
I've never A/B/Y the three pickups to tell you which of the 2 sound the closest to the original PAF.

  • They are both very good instruments. All in all, the Standard is a better ax, but certain years of Classics are great, too. I just played my Honeyburst Classic at the store and fell in love with it. They are similar enough to compare and a real nice Classic can be the right instrument over a Standard. Preference enters into the choice.
Thanks for your take on the Bursts, Ian.

  • Congratulations!
I have a Classic and it's a great guitar. I like the neck better than the baseball bat necks, and they're the about the same guitar as a Standard.
I changed out the pickups a couple of months ago with Duncan P-Rails and put in push pull switches to run them as single coils,, P-90's, and Humbuckers and it's a REALLY versatile guitar. I picked mine up cheap and you can't beat them!

I just looked for that thread I made about them but I think they wiped it clean. It had pictures of the mod and everything. I'll find it later, and it's too nice to sit inside. I'm off to my neighbor's front porch rocking chairs to play the Classic while he plays his Standard, and we'll bug the neighbors. :D

    Edit: Found it! :)
