What is the doggone difference between a key, a scale and a mode?

I think the best thing to do would be to take all the theory you learnt and go play and try to use it...better to go out and do something than sit and talk about it with music...it's all about practice and time not how much you can read about scales.
  • Okay, say you're playing something in the key of Cmajor. And say your chord sequence begins on that chord. That's your first position. Now, to solo over a major chord you would use the notes of a Cmajor scale: C - D - E - F - G - A - B - C.
    Now, if you went to D for your next chord (the second position), and played the notes D - E - F - G - A - B - C - D, you would be using all the notes in the C major scale but starting from the D. This is called the Dorian mode. The Phrygian mode is the third position, E - F - G - A - B - C - D - E ...

Here'sa table of the modes, all using the notes of a C major scale.

    1. C to C Ionian (Major)
    2. D to D Dorian
    3. E to E Phrygian
    4. F to F Lydian
    5. G to G Mixolydian
    6. A to A Aeolian (pure minor)
    7. B to B Locrian
