Endless Loops

So when I'm trying to come up with rhythms, it's more like a Neil Young style of non-complex chord structures, more based on the strumming pattern. I may capo the 3rd and have a progression of Dm - C - G - Am that I'm diggin'. I'll have a few variations on strum timing to keep it from being completely repetitive, but I can never get out of the damn loop.
I've begun learning theory and know the basics on major keys and what not; a little about the I-IV-V progressions and such. I can't seem to figure out what it really means to play in a minor key which I actually think may be what I'm doing because it's more of a melancholy sound than upbeat. Regardless of whether that's the issue or not, the problem remains.
I can't get out of the damn loop. Does anyone have any suggestions (maybe something theory based that I can apply) that I may be able to use to help get me to that damn chorus and bridge.
