Cool Question...

No one probably knows this...

But the singer in one of my bands would like to know this and I didn't know. I checked the flow diagrams and read up on things but couldn't find the answer.

For songs like Daughter and even Blood, when they are played live, Ed has reverb and delay in his mic toward the end of Daughter and middle of Blood.

my question is the effect that gives him this sound, is it in a pedal that he uses onstage that he just hits? or is it something that an engineer puts on at that certain time during the song?

any info on this would be great

    I think I've seen a DD3 delay on stage before he might use I think it's in the guitar chain though, but 9 times out of 10 it's an effect the FOH engineer turns on. If you don't have a badass engineer, you can always do it on stage. The guitar player will probably cover it up because without an engineer who would force him to turn it down? :p

    similar yes ranges, controls, and parameter might be different but yeah, if you had a guitar distortion and you plugged it into your mic, your voice would distort.

    the signer in some friends of mine band did this...he just used a regular boss dd-5 delay thru the mic
    standin above the crowd
    he had a voice that was strong and loud and
    i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
    eager to identify with
    someone above the crowd
    someone who seemed to feel the same
    someone prepared to lead the way

    Vocal effects are mostly via the engineer, although Ed does use a vocal effect unit himself for "Arc."

    The units used by the engineer are specially made to work with pro audio gear, and while they are similar to the stompboxes we use, they aren't the same. The ones people like Pearl Jam use cost a lot more money ($3000 and up for a delay unit, etc) and are made to work with a soundboard, not just a guitar signal.

    You can use stompboxes on your vocals, and they'll work okay.
    ...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.
