Your best year(s) for concerts

Nearing the end of another year, I was looking back at how few concerts I went to in 2007. I only went to Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza for one day to see Pearl Jam & Modest Mouse, and saw Weird Al at the Ohio State Fair. That's it. This is far below my normal average for concerts in a year. This then lead to me reminiscing about my best years for concerts:

2003 was the best year for me. That year I went to 13 Pearl Jam concerts (went to as many shows as I could get the time off to see, including following the band for nearly 2 weeks from Fargo, ND to Columbus, OH), and some Phish concerts including IT:

4/25 Pearl Jam – Cleveland, OH
4/26 Pearl Jam – Pittsburgh, PA
5/3 Pearl Jam – State College, PA
6/15 Pearl Jam – Fargo, ND
6/16 Pearl Jam – St. Paul, MN
6/17 Neil Young – Chicago, IL
6/18 Pearl Jam – Chicago, IL
- 6/19 Pearl Jam – Cincinnati, OH - Cancelled due to flooding -
6/20 – went to a Cubs game while I was in Chicago because Ed was there to sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch
6/21 Pearl Jam – East Troy, WI
6/22 Pearl Jam – Noblesville, IN
6/24 Pearl Jam – Columbus, OH
6/28 Pearl Jam – Toronto, ONT - met Ed in the parking lot after the show
7/5 Pearl Jam – Camden, NJ
7/6 Pearl Jam – Camden, NJ
7/9 Foo Fighters – Pittsburgh, PA
7/12 Pearl Jam – Hershey, PA
7/19 Lollapalooza – Pittsburgh, PA w/ Audioslave, Incubus, Jane’s Addiction
7/29 Phish – Pittsburgh, PA
8/2-3 Phish – Limestone ME - IT festival at Loring Commerce Center (former Air Force Base)
11/29 Phish – Philadelphia, PA
12/12 Dave Matthews & Friends – State College, PA

2006 was a close second and included my second trips to Bonnaroo & California for Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit shows:

3/7 Nine Inch Nails – Erie, PA
5/9 Pearl Jam – Toronto, ONT
5/10 Pearl Jam – Toronto, ONT
5/19 Pearl Jam – Grand Rapids, MI
5/20 Pearl Jam – Cleveland, OH
6/16-18 Bonnaroo – Manchester, TN w/ Radiohead (the greatest musical performance I have ever seen from any band), Oysterhead, My Morning Jacket (late night set), Beck, Tom Petty & more, unfortunately Les Claypool and Death Cab for Cutie were among the bands I missed because of scheduling conflicts
6/23 Pearl Jam – Pittsburgh, PA
6/24 Pearl Jam – Cincinnati, OH
6/30 Nine Inch Nails – Pittsburgh, PA
9/24 Roger Waters – Pittsburgh, PA
9/25 Tool – Cleveland, OH
9/26 Tool – Pittsburgh, PA
10/21-22 20th annual Bridge School Benefit – Mountain View, CA w/ Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Trent Reznor, Death Cab for Cutie

So what years were the best for others here and what shows did you see those years?

well, I've been to many shows over the course of my life, but I'd have say 2006 - got to see PJ about 5 times and I got to see the Who 2 times.

That's the first time in the history of my two favorite bands of my being able to say I saw them both in the same year. :)

for just PJ... i would have to say 2000.

drove all the way down to VA beach from NJ to see them kick off the north american tour with a bunch of buddies. stayed in VA beach for the entire week and loved every minute of it. then saw them three nights in a row at jones beach later that month.
  • 2006 was great for PJ shows.

2007 was great for a good PJ show, shows in general and great company ;)

    1996 or 2006

1996: I was 16. I saw the smashing pumpkins twice, radiohead 4 or 5 times, RATM, and many more, mainly at festivals.

    2006: my first PJ show.

This year was not bad though: 2 PJ shows, smashing pumpkins, interpol, editors, etc.
    2006: Antwerp, Paris
    2007: Copenhagen, Werchter
    2009: Rotterdam, London
    2010: MSG, Arras, Werchter
    2012: Amsterdam, Prague, Berlin
    2014: Amsterdam, Stockholm

kol, incubus and pj in nijmegen - perfect day!

chris cornell stunned me here in oslo
a bunch of lesser known bands has also stunned me this year.
    Metallica also!

I have one more coming up: Young Neils!
Considered by Neil himself to be the best cover band he has ever witnessed who plays his music. They play here in oslo twice every year. 22+23 of december. The singer has a perfect neil voice and he is also a god on guitar! They blow me away every single year and this year is going to be no different!

    Woho, its christmas time!

So what years were the best for others here and what shows did you see those years?

For me? In '96, I saw them.

Then, 2000, I saw them. So I guess I'd have to say those two years. :D
  • I have not seen PJ YET....but however 2006 I saw my first concert:

    3/9/06: NIN in Rochester NY
6/06: NIN in Saratoga Springs NY
    7/13/06: Ween in Buffalo
8/16/06: Allman Brothers/Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers at Darien Lake NY (first and probably only show I was REALLY fucked up at. I don't mind being fucked up but at concerts I like to jsut enjoy the show and rock out, not concentrate on how high I am)

10/28/06: AFI in Rochester (My buddy dragged me into this shitty concert...such a horrible concert)
11/4/06: Alice in Chains in Niagra Falls NY (such a great experience, got to meet the guys from HURT, such great people! Got to eat lunch with the bassist)

Then this year wasn't as exciting but I did get to see my favorite bands:

    Tool in Albany
    Modest Mouse in Rochester
Alice in Chains/ Velvet Revolver at Darien Lake
    Ween in Rochester

other than that this year has been my concert withdrawal year.

it is nice not to be alone in concert withdrawal. this year we have been to....zero!! (Play the South)

We're kicking off 2008 in a great way, though. Foo on 1/22!!!

I would say 2000 was the best year. Then 2004...we saw PJ at VFC in Florida. Fun.

Oh, and in 2005 we saw Weezer and Foo in the pit. Good times.
i knelt and emptied the mouth of every PUG around...

    7/5/98 dallas, 10/14/00 houston, 10/15/00 houston, 10/17/00 dallas, 4/5/03 san antonio, 4/6/03 houston, 6/9/03 dallas, 10/8/04 kissimmee

Yeah, but it's what I live for.
  • For me, the Best Concert year other than the PJ years would have to be 1989: Saw the Stones, the Who, and the Grateful Dead that summer.

That was the year the Stones toured the U.S., first time in 8 years, saw them 6 times that year; the Who's first tour of the U.S. in 7 years, saw them 5 times that year, and the Grateful Dead, well, off the top of my head not sure how many shows I went to that year (10+), because back in High School/College I used to follow them around like a little puppy dog . . .
    1996: Hartford; 1998: Hartford, Mansfield I & II
    2000: Saratoga, Mansfield I & II; 2003: West Palm, Tampa, Mansfield I & II & III; 2004: Boston I & II; 2005: Montreal; 2006: Albany, Hartford, Boston I & II, East Rutherford; 2007: Lolla
    2008: Tampa, MSG I & II, Hartford, Mansfield I & II; 2009: Chicago I & II, Philly I, III & IV; 2010: Cleveland, Buffalo, Hartford, Boston & MSG II.
