Binaural
I dont post here much anymore (I'm more of a watcher than a poster these days) but i just wanted to say how much I am digging Binaural at the moment, especially Light Years through to Sleight of Hand. Rival is really amazing, why is this no longer played live? I'd love to see it played as a rarity on the next tour whenever that may be.
To me, its Pearl Jam's underrated classic album. The production may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it really comes alive for me when listened to through earphones. Also amazing B-sides from this album on Lost Dogs (Fatal, Sad, In The Moonlight).
Anyone else really dig this album?

especially light years
felt like it was written about my life
Camden 6/19/08
Newark 5/18/10
MSG 5/20/10
MSG 5/21/10
Brian (Staten Island): Does Boom even speak to you guys?
SportsNation Jeff Ament: (6:42 PM ET ) we can only speak to Boom when spoken to...
this album captures some sort of emotion, i still cannot figure out exactly what it is, but an emotion that for me at least, hasn't been captured by pj or any other band. it's sort of a dark album, but it also has moments of realization and true beauty. it's more dynamic than any album and eddie is more honest and personal with his lyrics. for me, one of the greatest moments in my life was driving across country and jamming this album over and over. every time the first note of breakerfall echoed through my little car i was reborn. ill never forget seeing the ocean for the first time in years and blasting grievance. the moment where eddie sings:
"I want to breathe
Follow the scene
I want to taste
Everyone I see
I want to run when I'm up high
I want to run into the sea
I only want life.... to be...
I just want to be...
I will feel alive... as long as I am free...
is one of my all time favorite music moments. i better stop. i could talk about this album all night...
Nothing as it seems
Rival
Light Years
Insignificance
Breakerfall
Thin Air
Sleight of Hand
Not a bad song on the album!
Well maybe Evacuation.
EDIT: I bought all of Pearl Jam's albums back in 04, and Binaural was immediately my favorite. I liked it so much that my first PJ shirt was the Binaural one. Since then I've grown to love other PJ albums more but it is always in my top 3.
And the bridge on evacuation is amazing.
Nothing changes...torture then reward
torture then reward...torture then reward,
follows torture...follows reward....
Rival - the ultimate in my "fuck you" repetoire (yes, all my rivals WILL see what I have in store...) and those bridges are just beautiful
Evacuation, well it may not be everyone's favourite (yea yea I know how some of you feel about the chorus) but that bridge...
there was a solemn man, watched his twilight disappear,
altered by a falling eagle, a warning sign,
he sensed worry could be strength...
some serious power in there
And Insignificance, well, I'll never forget the first time I heard it, and have lost count of the times I"ve played it on my guitar....
Sometimes I wonder if the people that made this music realise how much they have done for the people that listen to it. I hope they do realise!
And I'm with ya people. I fuckin LOVE Binaural.
if they were all dead or broken up then you might be right...BUT..they are still making records and we may very well have not even seen their best work yet!
And that 2000 tour ... mmmm
I don't share this opinion, I think Riot Act is a highly accomplished record. "Can't Keep", "I Am Mine", "All or None" are fantastic songs and are three of my personal favourites. Even their latest release is highly accomplished, "Come Back", "Gone", "Life Wasted" and "Parachutes" reminding us of the genius that is Pearl Jam.
Pearl Jam has evolved (naturally) as they've grown older, it's perfectly natural and I think they're greater now then they were with the release of Ten. You only have to look at Metallica's St Anger album and Death Magnetic to see what happens to a band when they fail to adjust their music to a more all-round feel, they become one dimensional, predictable and subsequently tiresome.
As for Binaural, I absolutely like this album; but I don't love this album in the same way I love Vs. and No Code! Thin Air is my favourite song on the album and I often find myself skipping several tracks just to listen to Thin Air.
can listen straight through repeatedly w/ the exception of evacuation.
that boner of a song can't bring down this masterpiece.
8/25/92, 10/4/96, 10/5/96, 9/1/98, 9/4/98, 8/4/00, 8/6/00, 4/15/03, 4/16/03, 10/6/04, 6/16/08
That's interesting, NewDamage, merely because I haven't heard this opinion before. I think there are some contenders to this, Radiohead's: Amnesiac (I'm not a radiohead fan, but this album is a classic! Arcade Fire's: Funeral, Modest Mouse: The Moon & Antarctica and Bloc Party: The Silent Alarm? These are the albums that I would say are better than Binaural, but that's just my two penneth worth.
