i think you'll find that vitalogy on the whole is a great album to learn from. the whole album is simple and fun to play

I have been learning for 2 months or so now and have printed out dozens of tabs and found the 2 easiest songs to learn from start to finish are "here comes the sun" and "ruby tuesday" - both are mostly notes with a few simple chords.

A lot of songs that people generally mention have a lot of chords that take a while to learn - IMO a beginner shouldn't jump into too many chords, it can get frustrating.

Once you get a little experience, U2's "One" is another good one.

Anyone saying Betterman is good for newbies: wrong. That's not just strumming a few easy open or barre chords, it's picking and sliding. It's easy to those of us who have been playing for a few years, but it's hardly a newbie song.

The first song i learned how to play when i was learning how to play guitar was About a Girl by Nirvanna. I found most Nirvanna songs to be simple if you are in to them.

I have not played guitar in 4 years now though :( i should string it up and play again.

  • Standard newb songs in the tradition of grunge, punk, and classic rock:

    Smashing Pumpkins -- Cherub Rocks

Nirvana -- pretty much anything. Do you know what a BAR CHORD is? lol.

Pearl Jam -- Alive (hell, give the solo a try even) Jeremy, Porch (not the solo), RELEASE (mmm D chord), ALL of vitalogy (minus foxy mop, that one is a bitch), Hail Hail, Who You Are, Given To Fly (maybe? it's not that hard, really), the song YOU, Hard To Imagine for some really simple picking, hell even Yellow BedWetter isn't too bad.

Led Zeppelin -- Your Time Is Gonna Come (good picking), Whole Lotta Love, Hey Hey What Can I Do. (can't think of much else. don't know that much zeppelin myself, though Stairway isn't even that complicated, of course again minus the solo)

Alice In Chains -- Whale & Whasp (great picking, i fukin' love this song too) actually all of Jar Of Flies is rather simple, just multiple parts. Nutshell is a good one for some more odd chord shapes, and Don't Follow is a really easy D\G\A chord pick kinda thing.

Guns N Roses -- you know i had to bring this up. Mmm. GNR.
*Mr. Brownstone is not too terribly difficult. The intro is some fun pull off work in 1st positition. The verse is just power chorded and so is the chorus.
*Used To Love Her -- easy as pie. D A G. Check out the Stone's song "Dead Flowers" (which the Gunners also coverd) for an identical riff.
*One In A Million -- A to B7 hammer on to C Cadd4 G F- oh hell look it up
    *Out Ta Get Me
*Sweet Child O Mine -- learn how to piss off guitar center employees.

    Van Halen
*Dance The Night Away. Far and away the easiest VH song, i believe

    AC\DC
*pretty much anything. Simple chord changes utilized to bombastic effect.

    The Pixies
*several easy songs. Although many pixies songs rely so heavily on bass with just a few guitar fills and drones that it becomes hard to replicate with out backup instruments. Try "Gigantic" for starters.

    The Ramones
ANYTHING -- how bout "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" or either of the songs that PJ currently covers are easy as mud.

Ok, this is good for now?
I gotta get back to work at any rate.

    HAVE FUN WITH IT!

i think you can't go wrong with anything of neil young...
how can you go wrong with:

Rockin' In The Free World - try this one first
Hey Hey My My - advance to this
The Needle And The Damage Done - a the picking can be a little tricky at first, but it is a lot of fun playing, start without hammer-ons and pull-oof at first, add them latter
