Your own Cover Songs and stuff like that.

Ello all,

Been on these forums for a while now, in fact my boss has decided its my job to browse the forums instead of actual work....

Anyhow, I post a lot on giventowail which is a site I know you are all aware of.

On there there is the section for Pearl Jam covers, and its a good idea (there is also some good stuff of course) however I was thinking of starting up a site just for cover songs.

For example if you had done your own cover of say a Soundgarden track you could upload to the site and get stats of how many people have downloaded, and get it rated no matter how good it was.

The idea of the site was it was going to be a collection of unsigned artists doing their own versions of their favourite tracks.

I was just wondering whether there is any legal implication, and if so how I keep the site safe (for example I am sure the Record Companies would have something to say).

My personal believe is that someone doing a cover song, for no monetary gain has to be classed as Art. Its immitation certainly but so is the painting of the Mona Lisa, did Mona Lisa herself sue the artist? I think not!

Anyway I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of this sort of thing, and whether it would be a good idea?

The whole site will be pretty nifty (I hope) in that it will be searchable, list by genre etc, a forum to discuss. And of course anyone will be free to upload their tunes as long as they are there own work. All I will ask is that people will register so that I can ensure people are legit (ie email verification before I let you upload or rate songs)

Good idea, bad idea? Let me know :)

Cheers,

M

  • i think it sounds like a good idea. i don't think there would be any legal issues, but i don't really know.

also thought your rooster cover was pretty cool.
me you wouldn't recall, cause i'm not my former.

May set it up and post it up here.

Its just it seems a lot easier for people to do a quick cover of a song and sometimes this can show a lot more about their skill as a guitarist or vocalist so why not just set up a site were people can upload things they are proud of or something...

I am sure there are other sites, but no harm starting my own.

Thanks for getting back to me mate :) and thanks for what you said about Rooster :)

If you charge for downloads, or use advertising to make money off the page, you'd probably run into trouble. But if it's FREE, and you make no money doing it, nobody will have any trouble with it.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

    Will deffo be free...

I just thought that money grabbing record companies frown on anything that they can see as infringing copyright (for example when Sony and Epic tried to close down OLGA because somehow Tablature created by people is infringing copyright!!!)

I will set it up and see how it goes....gimme a few days and get your songs ready people :)

The issue there is that OLGA does recieve support from ads, and it also undercuts Sony from being able to release official tab books.

Aha, thanks for that I never understood how they could call it illegal.

The only thing I would possibly do on my site is add a link to Amazon or something, so that if someone likes say a pearl jam cover there will be a link to amazon in case they want to buy the album or something......might not do that but I though it would be a good idea.

Anyway thanks a lot for all the replies, I feel a lot more secure in setting this up now :)
