Easy. Plug direct in a Hiwatt and you got it. His tone is mostly clean with some dirt added here and there. You can play with the drive tone knob and see what you get. I'm guessing you don't have a Hiwatt so post what you are playing thru.
  • Some of us have hiwatts. And feel the need to tell people about it every day.

Right... I hate that kind of showing off. :D

As for the original question... I think any guitar with humbuckers (maybe others can tell which kind/output/position) plugged straight into a cranked EL34 equipped amp would get you pretty far.

If you want one and you live in the UK you can get one from Hiwatt like Pariah

If you live in the US and you don't want to pay the ridiculous shipping/tarriffs you can scour Ebay for a used DR 504 and fane loaded Hiwatt 4x12

Or you can get a Reeves as in Dave Reeves (DR) 504 from various places, one of my favorite dealers is http://www.fatsoundguitars.com in North Carolina.

Gibson has again begun to sell the Gibson SG with P-90 pickups for 850 at Musicians Friend, the same price as the SG Special.

You'll then need to get some Lindy Fralin P-90's off his site or Ebay or a dealer and install them, oh and take a loan out to pay for it all....

The Reeves Amps (DR 504) runs around $1750 new with a 4x12 cab running oh between 800 and 1000 dollars.

A used Hiwatt (DR 504) generally runs around 1200 to 1500 dollars and the cabinets if you can find them between 400 and 1000 dollars.

You'll do about as well with an Orange/Matamp/Marshall cab with Celestion Greenbacks, but Fanes are more accurate. Stu at Fatsound says the new Fanes don't sound like the old ones and the Vintage Purples that Reeves uses stock are more true to the tone.

Oh and there's an original SG Junior (Gimme Some Truth-MSG) at Fatsound for around 1000 bucks for anyone interested.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

    Eddie doesn't use a Fane-loaded cab though? I know it's a Marshall but I don't know if it's got 30's or Greenbacks in it.

EDIT: On http://www.giventowail.com/ it says it's a 100w cab, so they should be Greenbacks.

yeah, 100 watts means Greenbacks. sweet, delicious greenbacks om om om....

they are really close to fanes anyway, very similar sound, one of my favorite speakers.

  • I just got a Line6 PodXT Live for christmas and they have a modeled Hiwatt amp on there...I got a perfect Pete Townshend/Ed tone with it.

This is probably the most versatile piece of gear you can buy for guitar. It works wonders.

Indeed the pod is a descent tool. There is a Guitar and Bass pod in the studio I record and help others record in. Guitar wise usually split a guitar single thru a couple mic'd amps then send a third single thru the pod. Bass wise, the pod gets used a lot to come up with many different tones. Unfortunately the bass pod has no support from line 6 like the guitar pod. All though we have been promised it for a long time. There is still no line 6 website set up to download new bass pod tones etc... Which is a bunch of poop!!

Congrats on the new PodXT Live. I've been curious about it since it came out.
I have the Flex III Plus and it also has a Hiwatt model but I rarely use it. Ed's tone is really nothing special, imho, so I pretty much use any tone that I think fits the vibe of the song.

With the XT Live, what amp are you playing thru with it? I guess it's like a POD but just laid out on the floor, right?
  • Eds tone nothing special?

pshhh. His live tone is pretty amazing to say the least.

Haha... Ed's tone is very basic and can be replicated on any amp if you have good ears. He plays direct into his Hiwatt with no effects. I don't see how that is considered amazing. You want amazing live tone? Check out Joe Satriani or Eric Johnson. Ed's a great songwriter but don't get me started on his guitar skills or tone, please. I beg of you not to get me started cuz it will get ugly. :-)
  • As far as I am concerned the simpler the better. I think his vintage highwatt produces an amazing tone. One that cannot be equaled by x amount of effects pedals. And in defense of his guitar skills, it's not like we've ever seen them. He seems to be a great rythm guitar player. I won't claim that he is any type of shredder in his spare time but we can't say he isn't regardless of how improbable it is. And I also don't wanna see dave mustaine wanking off all day at some ridiculous fast tempo, well maybe for 10 minutes but then I'd get sleepy.

I think theres a whole lot of tone snobs (not me inluded), that would say that the only thing that claiming the ability to reproduce a hiwatt sound on any amp proves is the poor quality of your ear.

Tell Paco his $1200 orange combo tone is just one of many setting possible on some modeling amp and he may die of of heart attack then come back to haunt you :)

  • i think ed's tone is fucking unbelievable. i absolutely love his sound. i don't understand why people bash ed's playing abilities, i think he's a great player, especially when you look at how he can sing so great at the same time. can't wait until i get my finances together and hunt down a vintage hiwatt setup.
me you wouldn't recall, cause i'm not my former.

I know I'll never win this type of argument with fanatics but Ed's tone is really nothing special. He idolizes Pete Townsend and The Who and the Hiwatt is all about The Who which has been the signature tone for The Who longer than I've been on this earth. For the songs that Eddie plays, it is simply not hard to replicate those tones on stage. I've been playing PJ tunes on stage and with bands for about 4 years now and I'm not claiming to be any fretboard master but simply put, Ed's tone is pretty easy to pull-off especially with the simplicity of music being played. I'm just one of those guitarists that believe a lot of tone comes from fretboard attack. The rig supporting you just makes your playing that much better (or worse). Ed's a great songwriter and that is what I love so much about Pearl Jam but I'm just not a fan of his guitar playing and Ed, himself, claims that he isn't trying to be a Mike McCready or any other person who has studied the guitar in depth. Check some of these demos that I did with an old band that played a lot of pearl jam and let me know what you think of this tone . We did these takes in one day with no mastering so they are pretty raw.

It's about time we had some good arguments in this forum.

    This is fun.

Obviously all of us love the overall sound of Pearl Jam. Personally I think the slightly bright townsendesque tone that Ed's rig adds gives the overall sound body. It frees up stone to play more of his grooves. No it's not all that difficult to obtain and that may be a good thing, be glad you guys aren't addicted to Eric Johnson. Instead of $1,500 to $2,000 for the real deal DR 504 or a Reeves and maybe a couple hundred to get the DR back to perfect working order you'd be combing through want adds garages and the like searching for "THE" perfect JTM 45 all running you in excess of 4 grand then you'd be going through hundreds of Tubescreamers and Fuzz faces until you find the right one.

modelling amps and pods definately have there spot in the tone world right there next to pro tools and you can get damn nice tone out of them, and a hell of a lot of variety too.

Personally I'm addicted to glowing vaccum tubes and how they sound and react, I don't think it's to the point quite yet where the digital model's are dead on but they are damn close and they are allowing people in the studio and in bands to have a lot more available tones at their fingertips.

The quest for tone is a never ending quest but it is an exciting journey. We must embrace new technology while celebrating the brilliance which is the vaccum tube.

I'm intrigued by the new Pod XT Live and I want one too eventually but I love the stuff I can pull out of my little Orange too. All in all it just makes me feel good.

Bottom line is it's all individual. Even Pearl Jam has shown that their sound can be pulled from a variety of setups. Mike and Stone have a significant attachment to the past with their incredible vintage axes and the like, as well as having a foot planted in the future, with the digital fx modelers Mike uses live and even the Trentinos which are relatively from the new school as far as amp designs go.

It's taken me several years to realize that I adore single coil pickups. Sure I like humbuckers too, but overall if I had to pick one, I gravitate towards the single coil. It's all about experimentation, listening and enjoying music, the rest is just gravy.

Exactly. Eddie's tone is pretty good and I'll be the first one to admit to it but it is simplistic which makes it obtainable for any guitarist with half-decent ear. I'm one of those guitarists on the Line6 bandwagon. I've been using their stuff since 2001 because I'm in a band that plays everything from The Who, Zep to Pearl Jam, Greenday, and everything in between. I need the versatility and My Flex III Plus and HD147 have come thru for me on stage without a hitch.

As for the bands tone, I'm an old-skool fan. I've been fan since '91 and remember seeing them on SNL for the first time when Sharon Stone was the host. They played Alive and I think Porch. The overall vibe of the band was so intense and raw back then and it still gives me chills when I just think about it. The simplicity of Stone and Mike's rig was simply perfect for the music they were playing on Ten. A Les Paul or Strat right into a Marshall with a few stomp boxes is classic. I just love that classic rock tone. It's my favorite a la Jimmy Page. It's pure and it screams rock and roll. Give me that any day. Yikes, I need to ditch work and get back to my Les Paul!!!!

well, my jazzmaster (which was mahogany too) had P90s and i thought they were nice and middy. not too bright at all and the bass was tight. it's wasn't droopy at the low end at all. i certainly didn't find them harsh.

i thought you had a faded sg or am i confused?
