elusive tubes

Does anyone know anything about tubes, like in debth stuff. I want to create a tube preamp or something, but don't know how the damn things work. So what are the components of a tube, where can I buy them, what are the best sounding tubes, how do you get different sounding tubes, how do I use them, etc.
