Are the lower priced Hiwatts any good? Im looking into upgrading from my shitty marshall practice amp, however, not to a full head and stack system. I am looking for tonnes of tone, for a reasonable price. I know ed uses the expensive heads, but will i get a similar tone from the lower end Hiwatts? ny Any other suggestions would be welcome...

Below are some examples of what i found...The extremely low prices raise my doubts and questions of the quality.

the all tube custom 20 seems like a pretty good amp for the money (about $350) but it's not really a true hiwatt, and really, a used hiwatt even a bulldog DC 40 would be too loud for what you want to replace. They are probably fine for the money just don't expect greatness.

These are all essentially Fernandes trading on the Hiwatt name. Generally the military style super reliable turret track construction (Harry Joyce/Dave Reeves) and the tone of those amps are what has made them famous. I'm sure they are fine for a practice amp but there might be better in your price range.

If you want a practice amp, I suggest the Roland Cube, the Orange Crush 10 and the Vox valvetronics line.

the orange is the toughest one to find.

With tube amps, you get what you pay for.
