thumbing the bass note

ok, so i watch mike play ledbetter, right? and he's pulling this shit with his thumb to play the barred B and A chords so he can do more shit with his pinky and hammer-ons and pull-offs. my question is this... i tried doing that, and it feels impossible to play cleanly. does one need specifically big thumbs to be able to pull this off, or do i just suck??? cause it could easily be either one...

i've noticed john mayer do this a lot too... a LOT! seems to allow for more versatility in the voicing of chords and melodies...
