I'm tempted to get it so I can really use my A/B pedal and blend both amps.

Then again, would the lil fender get drowned out in a live situation?

    I could always mic it.

Or I could not worry about it and park this beauty beside my bassman...

Yep, looks exactly like mine. According to mig mine's from '74 or '75. I'm totally happy with it. It sounds warm and spunky. The tubes really react to the smallest nuance in playing. With the volume on 6 it starts to go into natural overdrive, which sounds heavier and meatier than anything you get with a pedal, though it also really delivers with one (an overdrive pedal).

Since I never played a gig in my life, I can't help out with how it would hold up on stage. Check mig for that one. It is 'only' 6 watts. But for home playing and recording, this is a true tube beauty in it's simplicity. I'm never parting with it and if I get the chance to get me another one (or a vibro champ), I'd definitly go for it.

Putting it next to a Bassman 10 is like putting a Jack Russel next to a German Shepherd. But remember that Jack Russels are pretty lively little bastards.
  • Well, a Champ rated at 6 watts thru a single 8" speaker won't keep right up with a 50-watt Bassman 10 thru 4-10" speakers. But it'll hold it's own, and will surprise you how loud it can get.

Jimmie Vaughan's rhythm guitar player had a Victoria Bassman clone with a little Fender Pro Junior as a stereo slave, and he just mic'ed up both amps and got his stage volume from the bigger amp. Ani DiFranco has been using a Pro Junior as well for her PA sound, with a Rivera half-stack for her stage sound. I've used my MusicMaster Bass amp as a slave to my Mig 50. So it's been done before.

I'd worry a little about the gig-ability of a small, vintage amp like that. If you babied it, and didn't turn it up past 4, it would probably be okay. Otherwise, you might be replacing tubes on a regular basis, and you'd find out fast if the caps, resistors, transformers, etc. are wearing out. Most people with small stereo slaves are using amps like the Pro Junior, that are newer and a little less collectable. The biggest thing I'd worry about with gigging is whether it's grounded or not, but most of the silverface amps were grounded.

I've played my Vibro Champ at a few gigs here and there, and done okay, but I really watch and listen close to make sure I don't push the limits. And mine was recently rebuilt. Those Champs are really ideal for bedroom/living room jamming, and/or recording. I'd like to pick up a blackface Champ to use with my Vibro Champ for stereo recording (and to experiment with speakers, tubes, etc).
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

Is that in the description of that amp, that he swapped in a speaker...am I blind?

It's tempting, but I think I will satisfy my gear addiction with a Keeley Rat.

The Champ auction says, "The speaker and tubes are new replacements."

If it's anything other than a Jensen MOD, it's probably alright. But he didn't say it was a Weber or Jensen P8R or Eminence or Celestion... he would've said something if the speaker was worth mentioning.

Yeah, so it's probably nothing special...
