What can you guys tell me about different brands of tuning machines? The owner of my local guitar shop recommends locking Schallers. Any opinions on them or other brands? Thanks.

i had locking schallers on a guitar i made and though i didn't have it long, they were fine.

i only have experience with non-locking grovers, schallers and kluson-style on the guitars i have now.

the schallers seem the most stable to me. i suppose locking would be good if you used a lot of vibrato or heavy bending. maybe lockers are better if you use lighter strings too. not sure on that one.

I have non locking schallers on my Les Paul. They are Excellent.

check out http://www.stewmac.com they sell a few other varieties.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • thanks, i've got a black epi les paul standard. the tuning gears are pretty shitty, so i was thinking of upgrading them and the nut(the guitar won't stay in key very well at all, needless to say). can anyone tell me what kind of extra drilling i'd need to replace the stock tuners with schallers?

http://www.guitaristonly.com/ try that before you change out the nut.

if you need a new nut http://www.graphtech.com is a good spot as is http://www.earvana.com

  • Warmoth has good nuts, too... http://www.warmoth.com

I'm a non-locker myself. But I've been eyeballing the Planet Waves tuners a lot lately...

Awesome. The best part of that show, the dvd's are cheap. Hilarious. Season 2 is out in May...or March. It's one of the three months that begin with an "M".

I haven't seen a lot of season 2. About the only one I saw was with Rick James at a party at eddie murphy's brother's house. Hilarious.

I know. I should tape it, as chances are I'd be out or working when it's on. But then, you know, I''d probably forget to tape it. That's why I can't wait for season 2. Man, this totally isn't the tv thread is it?

The usual upgrade for Les Paul's seems to be to the kidney bean shape Grovers. The Epiphones tuners don't really feel of that good quality. The plastic parts feel cheap and the mechanism is a little sloppy...

the epi tuners are truly pieces of shit and should be replaced as soon as possible.

    Clarification:

Epiphone's green-plastic TULIP tuners are pieces of shit and need replaced. Their kidney tuners are actually pretty good.
