Whats better, marshall jackhammer or digitech grunge?

I have the choice for a new distortion pedal, either of the marshall jackhammer or digitech grunge, i wouldn't mind the fact that the jackhammer is an overdrive as well as distort pedal but i've heard great things about the digitech grunge cuz thats the sound i go for, maybe pj's during no code but also smashing pumpkins style, which is better in general terms?

    The jackhammer is a little sturdier than the grunge and much more flexible. I don't know if "better" can be used here. They both distort and generally emulate the same amplifiers tone. I'd go with the jackhammer for slightly better build quality and tonal flexibility, but the Guv' nor might fit you better.
    Cobain used a Boss DS-1 if that means anything to you, it's in the same price range as those two you mentioned. For the SP tone, you pretty much need to buy an Electro Harmonix Big Muff and Small Stone as they are an integral part of that bands early tone.

    Essentially the sound to you is the most important, play both with your rig and decide from that.

    Well i've basically got a Boss ds-1 through a marshall avt-50 amp and its great for pj stuff, but i'm looking for the crunchier sort of effect you know? i realise that i can create the sound pretty much already but it affects the clean sound i've set up. Whats the difference between the guv'nor and jackhammer?

    The Guv'nor is an emulation of the crunch channel of a JCM 900 amplifier.

    The Jackhammer seeks to emulate the lead channel of the JCM 800 amplifier, essentially more gain, more scream, it's a little edgier wheras the Guv'nor is a little more rounded. If you're looking at the Jackhammer, the Boss Metal Zone should be in consideration as well but it depends on your budget.

    You may want to check out the Visual Sound Jeckyll and Hyde too. or honestly maybe your best option is to e-mail Telesonic (Eric Shannon), he's selling off his remaining distortions at 100 bucks, it's going to be really smooth with tons of output and it's built with care and exponentially better components than the other units you mentioned.

    You want something crunchier than a DS-1?

    I'd look at a Rat or a Big Muff. Preferably a Russian Big Muff.

    well it is the preamp section of the SLO. Funny you could probably buy a T50 yamaha for the same price.

    It's overall worth is debateable as is the Matchless/Bad Cat hot box.

    Get a Vibro Champ, load it with Chinese tubes, wire it to a 2x12" cabinet, and dime it.

    Since when did this thread become about communist penises? I have figured that with a marshall amp and the ds-1 i can get as much crunch as i want if i mess around, so i've decided to buy an MXR phase 90 pedal (insert embarassed/cheecky smiley face)sorry guys but i appreciate the inputs

    Well, a Marshall with a DS-1 really is the receipe for crunch, after all...
