I have a Fender Tele i bought a year and a half ago from guitar center and when i changed the strings last time (a few days ago) i noticed that the frets were getting deep grooves worn in them from the strings. Is this normal, I mean it's only a year and a half old. I do play it a lot but it doesn't seem right to me. My guitar also started buzzing a few months ago. could these two things be related? and does anyone know how i would fix this if it's possible?

the fret wear is normal. and it sounds like the guitar could use a set-up. all normal and not a major problem. just regular maintenence.

frets eventually need to be replaced. probably not yet though.

yes the buzzing has to do with fret wear and yes it's normal. Take it in to the luthier and tell him you need a fret recrown and polish to go along with a new set up. A recrown will save you the 300 or so it costs to re-fret unless you can do it yourself.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • Hmmm...thanks, I just can't believe that after only a year and a half this stuff has to be done. Oh well, I guess i'll take her in and see what can be done.

i would see how the set-up does first before springing for a fret levelling. i've got plenty of fret wear on a couple of my necks that aren't causing buzz.
  • Ok...I'll try that first. Hopefully that fixes it.
