Alive

Hey all. I am learning alive. The opening riff that repeats through the song is

slide up to 7th fret on 2nd string
hammer on 7th and 9th fret on string 3,
slide up to 7th fret on 2nd string
hammer on 7th and 9th fret on string 3,
then
it goes 7, 9 bend to 10 then back to 7 then open for the last note of the riff. (on string 3 again)

I looked at giventowail and have it sounding almost perfect. But it seems like when i do the second part with the bend I am missing a note in there. Like is there something I am supposed to do after the bend to create another note?

For instance it has 9 b10 r7 on giventowail. What does that r mean?

I am playing on an acoustic so I don't have much sustain. I am thinking that + lack of gain has something to do with it.

Thanks for any help guys.

  • I think its an open g cord hitting the middle two strings only.
    PJ + AIC = LoveThemBones
  • Wait, I think you had it. 9 bend to sound like 10 (with 3rd finger), then pullof to 7 (first finger should have been on 7 originally).

just for clarity's sake, you got the names of the strings wrong. it should be:
slide up to 7th fret on 5th string
hammer on 7th and 9th fret on string 4,
slide up to 7th fret on 5th string
hammer on 7th and 9th fret on string 4... etc., etc.

    but that's just semantecs.

as for your question, i haven't checked out the tab for that in years, but i'm pretty sure it:

    d -|- - - 0h7h9 - 7 - 9b10r9p7

meaning you bend the 9th fret of the 4th string (b) to a c (same as the 10th fret), release the bend back to the b and pull off to the seventh fret.

i generally play this keeping my index finger on the 7th fret, and hammer to the 9th with my middle (sometimes pinky), bend, release and pull off to the 7th (where my index has returned).

    hope this helps.
