I must warn you that a few people might suggest Line 6 amps. They are the devil.

For a good Fender tube-amp in that range, here are a few suggestions.

    Hot Rod Deluxe:
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=031116220805150131025216457502/g=guitar/search/detail/base_id/104807

Very dependable, pretty versatile amp. Two channels, clean and dirty. The dirty channel is more distortion than overdrive, but the clean channel can be driven by a Tubescreamer pretty nicely. The spring-tube reverb is nice, too. Plus the 40 watts are plenty loud for shows and practices, but not too loud.

For a bit more, a Hot Rod DeVille:
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=031116220805150131025216457502/g=guitar/search/detail/base_id/34510

With 4 10" speakers, it's plenty loud. A bit on the heavy side. But it's got lots of punch and clarity. Very similar to the Hot Rod Deluxe, but with more power and more speakers. Plus, the speakers are 10", not 12", a personal preference of mine.

For a vintage sound, a '65 Deluxe Reissue:
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=031116220805150131025216457502/g=guitar/search/detail/base_id/34509

22 watts of pure tube-tone heaven. Not quite as loud, so if you're playing with a rock band, it might not be the best choice. You could mic it up, and it would sound sweet. A lot of older, wiser guitar players are switching to lower-wattage amps, but they have the ability to mic their amp every night.

Good luck on your hunt. You can also search eBay for good deals, they can be had once in a while.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

    Speaking of which:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2572905906&category=38074&rd=1

These are the holy grail of guitar amps... that price is unbelievable, even for a reissue.

since you like Jack White so much I would suggest either a used Vibrolux. Deluxe. or 65 Twin. That would give you the same look as the stuff he seems to be playing. Fenders ooze cool anyway.

These are all over your budget brand new but I routinely see vibroluxes for 600 bucks on Ebay and Deluxes are even cheaper. They are all basically the same circuit. THe deluxe is 22 watts and one 12. the Vibrolux is 40 watts and two 10's. The 65 Twin is 85 watts and 2 12's note that you will get 0 overdrive from the twin untill its way over half and the neighbors can't take it. I'd go with the vibrolux myself if I could find one even if you have to save a little longer. I think it would give you the tone you are looking for an it's quite versitile and pedal friendly.

I guess we could mention Music Man amps...

Solid-state preamp, tube power amp, designed by Leo Fender. They're Jack White cool, too.

music mans are very popular in indie rock too for what ever reason. They are nice and clean and cool looking too but power tube overdrive just does it for me.

And they're USUALLY cheap, and easy to maintain.

I'll say a crate GFX1200 Head with a Crate 4x12 cab. Poop on your head.

i had a crate vintage club 2x12 50W all-tube. pretty nice actually. weighed a freakin' ton though.

My buddy in high school had a Crate Blue Voodoo... it was pretty damned sweet!

One of my 4x10" cabinets is a Crate Blue Voodoo. By the way, I think I'm going to re-load my Crate with Weber AlNiCo 10's... cross my fingers!

nothing is wrong with crate or thier cousins Ampeg, I was just chiming in because he said something about line 6. The Blue Voodoos are definately a rock/metal amp. Lots of high end bite. THe vintage clubs were excellent for the money quite frankly because no one bought them much like the Line 6 duoverb one of the rare diamonds in the rough. Tube amp market blues guys weren't willing to trade Fender for Crate. The GFX is actually a pretty decent sounding amp for cheap I just don't like that tone at all as I don't really play death metal.

I recorded some guitar tracks on a GFX once, just for shits and giggles... got a pretty nice clean tone with a mild delay on it for a song I wrote in the studio. Of course, we triple-mic'd the cabinet, so that might've helped.

And I still don't like Line 6. I'm free to dislike it, no?

I never said I loved them. I don't like Line 6 much either. but the Duoverb is a pretty good simple amp. They are getting better but they aren't quite there yet. Personally I think someone is going to mate a brilliant modeling preamp with a brilliant modeling power amp and that will win some people over. give it a few years.

Damn I wish I could afford a hifi tube amp for my stereo.

i like my POD. i have no experience with their amps. i'd like to think i don't have tin ears though and can recognize a good sound regardless of what it's coming out of.

pods are excellent pre amps. any problem with line 6 would be the poweramp and speakers, not really the preamp.

tons of people use pods to record nowadays.

I don't spend every bit of my savings and disposable income on good guitars, amps, and speakers to use a POD...

I need a microphone in front of a good amp, man...
