Crisis of the guitar type

Well I'm down to about a month till guitar purchase happens. As some of you know I was set on getting an american tele HS. Then yesterday while looking at how SG's are asymetrical (shocking I know) I saw the SG standard on musiciansfriend. That thing has the most amazing neck ever. Seriously it's just nuts. Cream bound rosewood fretboard.

So I am now considering a Gibson SG standard over the tele HS. This is a pretty big change since it is about 500$ canadian difference. It may cause me to go with a Hot rod deluxe rather than the mesa F-50.

So it's either Tele HS with Mesa F-50 or,
SG standard with F-30 or HRD.

I think the SG looks amazing too although I have to say I am unimpressed with the 3 colour choices you have (black, wine red, or natural burst)

I am currently leaning towards natural burst for the SG.
Plus the SG looks like an Axe or devil head which are both pretty badass.
The Tele on the other hand is a tele. It has my 2 pickups which is amazing. and it looks badass in all black. It would allow me to get my amp the F-50. I would replace the atomic 2 humbucker with a classic 57 I think so thats another 150$ or so.

You can see my dilemma in chosing awesomess or awesomeness.

And both possible combinations will also have a Big Muff as their pedal.

(exodus I already know what ur gonna say so don't bother)

Welcome to the wonderful world of choices. The more you educate yourself the more you want.

Play them both into both the amps you are looking at for a while and then sleep on it. Come back, play them again, make sure both feel good to you. Adjust the EQ's generally just try out all you'll do. then look at yourself in mirror with each guitar and decide which is coolest and go for it. Many places are offering year long financing with no interest, this is a good way to have your cake and eat it too. These 2 months are huge at dealerships March and April because they are clearing out stock for the new NAMM stuff now shipping. Its a good time to get them to wheel and deal.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • My new current favorite guitar is my 68 SG. It got bumped up last night. ( see the goodbye les paul thread!:)
The neck is just perfect on that thing, and the humbucker sound is perfect.

Play a bunch of them, and a bunch of tele's too. Like Paco says, eq them and don't be afraid to sit for hours and make noise. Each SG is different, Each tele of the same model is different. You may run across a Tele that you like better than an SG. They're both great guitars.

  • "Play them both into both the amps you are looking at for a while and then sleep on it." My big problem is that in Canada there is no massive guitar centre type stores

The odds of finding any store that carries an f-50 are slim to none. Finding a gibsonSG would be easy enough. Or even an epiphone one to see what they feel like.

As foor finding an American tele HS anywhere ....ever....don't think it's gonna happen.

I called the guitar centre in detroit a while back and they hadn't even heard of it.

If I get the HS I will have to order it. This means I don't get to play before I buy. But I know I love teles so...

Hmm if only there was a american tele HS deluxe for 1200 american this wouldn't be a problem.
    sweet sweet SG neck...arghghhhh...

well If you find a cheap ticket to Atlanta I'd be glad to host you. There are plenty of stores here.

  • I recently drove through atlanta on my way to florida. I can say it's definately nicer than detroit. I saw guitar center signs driving through some of the cities. To bad I am the only guitar enthusiast in my group of friends or we would have stopped.

My best bet is windsor. Toronto is too far and too big

I just want you to get exactly what you want. To be quite honest I'd get the F-50 outright and try to finance the guitar. I'm pretty certain you will be more than pleased with the F-50 the guitar is much more subjective.

    first off...
    telecasters suck.
    secondly,
the SG are becoming too abundant. they are friggin everywhere man, and it just makes them less and less cool.

i'd pick the SG over the tele but id pick something else over the SG.

and dont get a friggin black guitar, man.
so lame and if they get scrathed its almost impossible to get rid of visually.

    anyway.....
uhh.... which one is gonna cost u mosre? the SG?
anyway, i'd suggest getting a (slightly) used guitar. a hella lot cheaper and can still get the good quality if u find a good one.

telecasters do not suck. neither do SGs...

Black guitars are badass... so are SGs...

You can't really go "wrong," but you want to do "right" so follow the people advice and make an informed decision.

If you can't play all the gear you are looking at that makes it tough, but still investigate and find as much info as possible...

In the end get what you like the most and that which is most comfortable for you to play... you will play better and be happier with your purchase as a result.

    good luck...

House you ever heard of St Louis Music?

They distribute Crate and Ampeg I know. Somewhere around St Louis. i used to know a Sales rep from them. I was wondering if they had their own music store as well.

I have heard of them... I have a Crate PA...

I don't know that they have their own shop... I have never been there if they do.

Plenty of Ampeg stuff at the shop I go to though... they are making some nice bass equipment again, that's for sure.

I love ampeg bass stuff. I used to push the BA-115's when I sold stuff. The new HLF cabs are really nice.

I was just wondering since you were in ST Louis. I was thinking about a crate PA as well actually, the new ones look pretty good how much did you pay?
