I know Tom Morello uses one but is it versatlie or will it probably just become another noise making toy? Mostly though, is it worth the $200?

not really the same. the pedal is like a pitch bend on a keyboard. It's good for studio stuff, but can be a pain in the ass live. I have one I almost never use anymore. Try finding 1 in a pawn shop or used somewhere for a better price. I wouldn't pay $200 for one.

primarily a noisemaking toy though some of the pitchshifting is useful.

Get a second hand one... they take a bit of playing round to master. I had a second hand one then got a new jimi cry baby... I love mine and use it in both recording and live...
