Make Your Own Beats?

Hey all,
I'm going to be using a drum machine again when I record my next album since I don't have a drummer.
I have an Alesis SR-16. My question - should you make your own beats or just use the presets and mess with the tempos and stop/start/fill pedal? That's what I did last time and it turned out OK, but I was reading a book and the author insisted that if you record you should make your own beats, and not use the presets. Those of you who use or have used drum machines, what do you think?
The music I'm making is rock and roll in the R.E.M./U2/Springsteen vein, so it's not like I'll be doing any Chemical Brothers-type beats.
Thanks for any advice.
