e minor in whipping?

how do they do that part in whipping, in between the first and second verse when ed is just singing "the whipping" over and over? I checked given to wail.com and the chord listing for this sing is to play e minor for this section of the song. Maybe its because I play the song on my acoustic, but it really doesnt sound right. Is the effect produced in the song just because of the electric guitar or is the e minor part not correct?
