I don't know what you MUST have, but I'll tell you what I have, as an aspiring guitarist myself!

Ironically, the first ones I got was Guitars for Dummies! And The Guitar Handbook by Ralph Denyer.

Then it was the Fretboard Logic books. If there is one must own, I'd go with the Guitar Player Repair Guide by Dan Erlewine, as recommended by Whos_PearlJam (Thanks Bob!) With this books instructions, and a simple block of wood, I setup my Strat perfectly!

Oh, also Zen Guitar by Philip Toshio Sudo. There's nothing in that one about how to play, but its an interesting read nonetheless. Been meaning to re-read it. Its short.

But honestly, if don't already take them, find a good teacher and get some lessons! In the past two months or so my lessons have concentrated on nothing but scales, solo's and improvisation, and I feel like I've made great strides in becoming a better player.

    Good luck!
