Need help buying a Bass Amp...

I'm startin up a band and want to buy a nice bass amp... don't want to pay out my ass for it, i'm thinkin in the range of 300-400 dollars, and it should be able to loud enough to play small bars... 100 watts i was thinkin. It'd be nice if it was somewhat portable and didn't weigh a couple of tons, but I really don't care... Just want nice sound, loud enough, maybe some effects and stuff in there on the amp itself

Peavey and Crate both make decent combos in that vein. You should look for 100 watts, a single 15" or two 10", and a DI output is a huge plus.

I used a Crate BX-100 for three years, it was great.

I don't really care for the new Fender bass amps... I've heard some bad things about their reliability and I really don't like the sound. It could be alright, but it's not what I'd recommend.

I realize the Peavey's a little more than you were looking to spend, but you could most likely find one used either regionally or on eBay for cheaper. Ditto the Crate.
