I am new to guitar playing so what kind of pedal should I get? I am looking for one that is probably the most versatile for Pearl Jam's music. Any suggestions?

They also use a Boss Blues Driver

Is this what you are looking for?

  • What's your current setup? There are TONS of pedals that do different things. Distortion, Wah, Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Delay, etc...

Right now I don't have anything. just my telecaster and a small amp, it is extremely clean too.

  • Well, I love PJ a lot, but I didn't bought any pedals they use. You also can try a
Korg ToneWorks AX3000G. A few weeks ago I bought this one, but jesus christ, what a great sound you get when using this one.
  • can't go wrong with a Tube Screamer (TS-9)

price range matters a lot too btw, but generally overdrive/distortion are the cheapest effects.

  • All right, the TS-9 is a great idea. Also TS-5 tube screamer (cheaper). Chorus (Mike McCready feel)-Danelectro Milkshake chorus. I know people dont like it but as long as your dont stop the hell out of it-it's a good pedal. Dunlop crybaby wah is a PJ essential. Mainly the Tube screamer and wah are PJ essentials. My first pedal however was the BOSS DS-1 Distortion. I got it because of my love for Nirvana. I can get somekind of PJ feel too with it. Ebay is a great source for pedals though. Good luck, don't hesitate to IM or message me for pedal info-I love em'. This message pit is amazing for information!

If you want a Boss Blues Driver, I have one that is practically brand new that I will sell.

DS-1 was my first pedal as well. Can get some ok PJ tones and some Green Day out of it. That and the fact that it's only $40 online makes it pretty appealing to new players.

I also have an MXR Phase 90 which is pretty nice when used in moderation. On second thought though, don't get a phaser until you have some other effects in your chain. Go for an overdrive (TS-9) or distortion first, then perhaps a wah, then a delay, then other stuff.

Search on http://www.musiciansfriend.com for guitar effect pedals and with a lot of them you can hear sound clips.

  • The Big Muff by Electro Harmonix is a nice selection too.

Lot of hum though, and not nearly as versatile as others we've mentioned.... but nice.

But only if you have a half-stack. If you have a combo, the tone gets ruined

i don't actually agree with that. i get tones that i like using one through combos.

but, for pearl jam type stuff, a muff isn't all that useful.

I only know this from using it with a Fender hot rod deluxe so I'm not too reliable on that one.

  • I don't now much about effects and pedals and stuff.
But I really want to hear the sound of a TS-9.
If it's , like you guys say a good and nice pedal .
Then I want to hear the pedal once.
In the local store nobody gets the the permission to play with material if they see you are not sure about buying something , and the owners don't want to play also.

If they don't like that, don't shop there! You should be able to try before you buy!
