anybody any advise on soloing?
i'm a pretty good rhythm player but i really wanna be able to throw in a few solos, the rock/blues stuff that Mike does - I know that takes years and years tho.
i can solo but its usually pretty slow. its the speed that i really need help with.
any good sites with audio lessons?

what are the standard scales used in rock these days?
also something that i've never understood, how do you know what key you're playing your scale in?
Key is a great question, and hard to type out. Get a couple lessons from someone who can teach you some theory...
But one quick note, if you want to play a minor scale in a major song, use the 6th of the major. For example, if the song is in C, use an A-minor scale. In G? Use E-minor. F? Use D-minor. This is especially helpful for the pentatonic minor scales.
