I have a couple posters that have been underneath my bed for about 8-10 years, the oldest of which is my MSG poster from 1998. They are in good condition but very dusty, how can I clean them?..

I'm finally going to get them framed, just want to clean them up.

I am sure if you call a frame shop, they would be able to tell you, and might be able to do it for you while framing your stuff....:)

  • Do you have a static duster? It's like a wand thing with lamb's wool on the end (DO NOT use those swiffer things, they have chemicals in them that even Swiffer won't tell you what they are on the package). A very gentle dusting should do the trick sans chemicals.

Barring that, a good framing shop will clean them for you before mounting/framing :)

Yes, shake off the excess dust, then very gentle dusting. Something ultra-soft like a static duster will avoid scratching the posters and grinding in the dust.

Beware, once you introduce water (damp paper towel or whatever), you may get dark streaks where the dirt is dissolved and smeared. I would try to avoid that if possible, and also call a frame store, or maybe an art preservation place. I know for books you can contact libraries for tips...would a museum be the equivalent for art?

duster may work, but it may embed the dirt in the fibers of the paper more.

if you can be careful with some canned air that'd be my method, just don;t angle the can or it'll shoot the air out in liquid form and your poster will be shit. Maybe have someone hold it up and you can spray with it level in small controlled bursts. If that doesn't work your pretty much fucked, a frame shop may clean it but it'll cost you!

I was going to use my swifter, guess not now. What about those aerosol cans for cleaning your computers?

    BTW..

My MGS Poster I purchased on night one, 9/10/98. The famous "Breath" show was the following night, although the place was full of the signs Ed commented he had taken Viagara and was busy doing something else instead of practicing Breath (or something along those lines). You know they had plenty of posters, they did not run out like MSG 2008 I was at. You could have bought a dozen back then.

Right now the MSG I 1998 poster is in a tube with Seattle 2000, and Holmdel 2003. All are going out to be framed, I'm just looking for my ticket stubs to stick in with them in the frame.

In another tube I have my 1997 Oakland "Opening up for the Stones" poster, I caught them the second night of a four night stand with the Rolling Stones in 1997.

Sorry guys, I'm not trading a poster to a show I've been to. Especially one that is coming up on it's 10th anniversary this September, wow time is flying fast.. This poster was under my bed at my parents house for about 8 years, I brought it here two years ago when my Wife and I got married. I'm now getting around to it today.

There were plenty of posters available, IIRC I bought the poster on the way out at the end of the show. That's in contrast to the latest MSG show this past June when they were sold out of the posters an hour or two before the show started.

Just check E-bay, I'm sure they will pop up.

Here's another poster story for you, I live in New Jersey and flew out to Seattle in November 2000 to see the two Key Arena shows. I bought a few things at the shows including the poster for the show, to fly home I had to connect in Houston. So I fly Continental Airlines Seattle-Houston, about a 4-5 hour flight with the poster rolled up with a rubber band underneath the seat in front of me. I connect in Houston to my flight to Philadelphia, no problem the poster is still with me. I land at Philadelphia and walk off the plane with the poster in my hand, my parents who were picking me up met me and we walked to the baggage claim where I checked my bag (all I carried on board was the Seattle Poster). After I get my bag we are walking to the car, I stopped to tie my shoes.

About an hour later when we were almost home I realized I left the poster at the airport when I stopped to tie my shoes, I flew all the way across the country. Changed planes in Houston and forgot my poster on a bench at the Philadelphia airport while I stopped to tie my shoes. I called the airport a bunch of times to see if they found it but to no avail, I eventually bought the Seattle poster on E-bay but it does not feel the same as having the original I bought at the show if that makes sense.

  • How about scuffs on the poster? Are framing shops able to get those out of the silk screen? I've bought a few posters off of eBay from sellers who aren't the best at shipping and have a few posters with unwelcome scuffs. Thanks.

    Update:

The dust situation was not as bad as I feared, I could brush most of it off with my hand but I didn't. I took my dusty MSG 1998 poster along with my Seattle 2000 and Holmdel 2003 to a art place right near where I live, very professional place as we spent about an hour picking out the border colors for the frame etc..

Couldn't match anything to the Seattle 2000 colors so that's not going to have a border, it's mostly white anyway.

I gave the guy my ticket stubs for the MSG 9/10/98 and PNC 2003 shows which he will incorporate into the border below the posters, I was impressed with the work they had up on the walls which was mostly sports memorabilia. Guy was real cool, he said they would be done in three weeks. If I can find my Seattle 2000 ticket stubs he will include that too.

These are my first framed Pearl Jam posters so I'm excited to get them back, next up when these come back are Oakland '97, Camden '06 and MSG '08.
