Seventeen years later with over 60 million records sold worldwide and numerous awards and accolades, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready, Eddie Vedder and Matt Cameron continue to break new ground through music and innovative business practices. With nine studio releases, four concert DVDs, hundreds of cd and digital bootlegs and live recordings, Pearl Jam is going strong towards its 20th year.

This is from Stone's bio. In a world of uncertainty and unknown, it is comforting to read the above and to know that after all these years, one thing is still consistent and we can look forward to something new from the band we all love.

I think, that after almost 20 years as a continual band, that is a very fair statement!!

3 more years until HOF? or is is 25 to get in?

When do we start asking for tickets to the induction ceremony?

Most of us and many many people agreed with that statement, but if you open a internet poll most people around the world will vote for bands like: Metallica, R.E.M, guns and roses, AIC, u2, Nirvana, or Iron maiden.

U2 and REM are the only two out of that list that belong in the conversation

and both are arguably "pop" bands as opposed to "rock"

Yeah, I am not sure why Stone has it listed as 1991 - unless he (or whoever wrote that piece) onoly count from the time Ten was released. But I agree with you, Oct 22nd 1990 was their first live appearance and that is what I considered to be their anniversary as a band.
  • It was mentioned above, but don't discount R.E.M. - they were absolutely groundbreaking in paving the way for "alternative" bands (and here I mean in attitude, not in musical style - nonconformist and uncompromising) to make it in mainstream music and retain creative control. They played everywhere they could - no bar too small or seedy - for years, creating (along with Black Flag) the sort of national underground scene that gave local bands a place to gain their chops. I saw an interview with Henry Rollins once, where he commented to that effect, noting that for several years, his band and R.E.M. would chase one another around this circuit, one playing for a few nights just before the other, then vice versa.

Also, like Pearl Jam, some of their recent albums have been treated extremely unfairly by music critics - just because they've been evolving and haven't released "Automatic For The People II."

How's this for a new sig, speaking of? :
Do the world a favor: beat up a Rolling Stone critic today, before he can trash another great band!

can't agree with you on this one. i've seen far too many bands live, and a handful have better live shows. i'm not saying pearl jam sucks live, but that there are other bands out there that give a better live performance.

and as far as in the studio.......i think this band peaked with 'yield'. everything after, for me at least, has lacked. again, not saying the studio albums aren't any good, but to say nobody is better is a very bold statement.

I can't believe the first time i heard pearl jam I didn't understand what was all the hype about it... but 17 years later now I'm 31 and I can't remember a day without at least a single dose of Pearl Jam, I know it's weird but I fell PJ more like a good friend always by my side.

Thanks for all the incredibles years and for all the years to come!

But what month/day in 1990 did they officially become a band (Mookie Blaylock)?
I know after Andy Wood died that March, after the mourning period, Jeff and Stone finally got this band together. Wasn't it in the summer of 1990?

I don't agree. I've seen plenty of live bands and are probably older than you, and believe me PJ are the best live band I've seen. This includes bands like U2 and Pink Floyd. Who the hell are these bands that "give a better live performance". Back up your statements. I want to know in what way these bands are better live than PJ, do tell! I get sick of people like you criticising PJ and saying their later albums aren't up to scratch. It seems nothing they do after Yield is going to please you, I think you're very hard to please but for me PJ can do no wrong.
