Depends on how many people you need to get sound too.

The more power you have combined with the efficency of the speakers directly effects clarity as you travel up the volume knob.

An 85 watt amp won't be exponentially louder than 150 but the 150 will be cleaner for longer.

200 watts is a pretty great PA for one or two guys but you can get by with personal stuff too.

Carvin has a nice one called the Stage Mate. Fenders Passports are ok, Kustom has a good tiny system. The more money you put in the cleaner it will sound as a general rule but cost is always a factor don't overspend what you need unless you plan on using it you can always trade up. It's pointless to get a 200-400 watt PA if you are mainly using it only as a vocal monitor with an acoustic guitar in small rooms because you'll never use that much power.

My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

Yeah, like Paco said, there's a lot of room for variation here...

How many inputs? What kind (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards, CD, etc)? Monitors, or just mains? How much power do you need? How big of a gig will you use it for? What's the budget?

That's like asking what kind of guitar to get, without any other information.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.
