Dabbling Around with Strings

Been playing guitar for about 15 or so years...26 years old now.

Both Electric and Acoustic...

Started dabbling in other stringed instruments.
Retuned a small traveling guitar to nashville tuning, just got a cheap little mandolin, have dabbled in ukulele before and will continue.

Literally got the mando about an hour ago and by ear I learned Rise and Losing My Religion. It's pretty easy if you think of it as playing a lefty guitar righty in terms of the string setup, so those songs came practically easy.

One stringed instrument that I've tried only a handful of times with no success is the violin....

anyone else have a similiar situation hehe?

Looking into both the Jerry Jones Electric Sitar as well as a JJ Baritone Guitar

  • I've got a real sitar, and a laud which I've had for years.
  • hmm...a laud/lute is something I've always wanted to actually play.

I'd love to start playing violin, but I'm a lefty and was told that they only make violins in right hand. I guess if I learned to play a violin in right hand I might be good enough to play guitar righty as well!

It's double-coursed, so you need to watch the tuning. People I know play it with a pick, but personally, I find fingerpicking works much better. It works exceptionally well in traditional Irish music, tuned to DADGAD.

Fins favorite alt tuning. Woot! Damn i need a pat on the back for that. My memory kicks ass. For serious. ;)
  • The mandolin is a very pretty sounding instrument.
Finsbury, you have a real, like Ravi Shankar sitar. That is so cool. I would think that would be a difficult instrument to tune and get to sound good. Wow!
  • Nice work on that sitar Fins!

I've been playing the cello a bit. Great instrument and it's pretty loud! The neighbors sure know when I'm screwing up. :D
I have all these weirdo instruments around too, like banjo mandolin and banjo ukulele. They're fun and pretty easy to play and when people look at them, they look like, WTF is that?
