So i have about $550 to spend. I have and old epiphine electric that cost me $199, but its dying. I love the way it plays, so i am looking for something similar.

I am back and forth about saving up another $500 or so and going with a Gibson - or doing the financing thing. however, i think i need something soon, so i found this:

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Lefty-G400?sku=512454

now, keep in mind, the things running against me are that being a lefty, the stores dont have these guitars in stock, so i cant test it out in person (but guitar center will let me return it if they order it and i dont like it.) and i have kinda chubby/thick fingers
Also, i've always liked the neck of my old crappy epiphone - thick.

I bought an epiphone casino semi-hollowbody a few years back, and it's ok, but i got it off ebay, and kinda regret it. I like the sound and it plays nicely, but the neck is a little narrow for my liking. It's great for 20% of my songs.

so anybody else use a g-400? or anything similar?

a family member recently bought one of these. it seemed fine to me fit and finish wise and all that and it felt good.
  • I have one of these and the best advice I can give is to play as many as you can before you buy. The pickups are pretty crappy so, try to find one with decent pickups or be prepared to switch the pickups as soon as you buy it.
  • I have a G-400 and I love the tone. Beware! Epi makes some pretty bad POS's that aren't set up right and Gibson's are overpriced. Highs and lows to both guitars. I love my G-400, though

Agree with the above poster on the Gibsons. They have really gone downhill in quality in the last few years. You're just paying for the name now. Being a lefty myself, I feel your pain about trying guitars out. I'm 6'3" and have pretty big hands myself. You might want to look at a more "shred" (that's what the kids call it) oriented guitar with a bigger neck. Ibanez RG's actually fit me pretty well. They're not the greatest on clean tones though. If you're dead-set on the SG-style body, you might be able to find an Epi with a 60's style neck. Your best bet is to check Ebay, do a lot of browsing on guitar websites, and try to find something similar to what you're looking for in a store. Sometimes, you just have to take a leap of faith and buy a guitar sight-unseen. I did that with an Ibanez Talman off Ebay, and it's my favorite guitar now.
  • Ebay is my friend. Beware but usually, you'll be very happy with your purchase.

By the way, our bassist is 6'3 and he's had the problem with neck size. I'm 5'4 so I also have a problem with neck size however, our problems are totally opposite.

  • You guys are awesome, thanks.
I dont really know much about the pickups, or pickups in general. I guess i'm not too picky becasue I thought my cheap epiphone sounded great, and i'm sure those pickups were nothing special.

    Any suggestions on pickups?
And i'll check out the Ibanezes too. I never really thought about those guys before. thanks again!

  • You cannot go wrong with Gibson Burstbuckers.

Yeah, you could always put those in an Epi. It'll basically make it a Gibson.

But it won't weigh as much, haha
