Need help with Drums for little bro for christmas...

hey guys, my little brother has been playing drums for a little while now and i need to get him a decent snare drum for christmas. i play guitar, so i don't know that much about drums. i need to get him something decent so he doesn't have to upgrade anytime soon, and can use it when he gets around to putting a kit together. something mid-range price wise, not the top of the line, but not a p.o.s. either. any suggestions would be great, and a price frame for mid-level type quality would help.

    DW would be the best factory option, followed by a nice Pearl. A good snare costs in the neighborhood of $150-400, though...

    I'd personally suggest the Pearl Chad Smith signature model... $220 worth of ouch, but very nice.
    ...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.
