I'd reccomend the solid body though, and the cheap Les Paul... always a good decision...

Now, all of this is subjective. There are Epiphone Les Pauls, Explorers, SG's, DC LP's, etc. Fender and Squier both have many varieties of Teles and Strats, with many different pickup options. As far as amps are concerned, the Pro Junior is a little all-tube practice amp, the Peavey Bandit II is a solid-state amp that could gig, and the Classic 30 is an all-tube amp that could gig. The DS-1 is predictable... if you ever wanted distortion, the DS-1 is the perfect one to start with. The TS-9 is a bit better in quality, but is really only worth using in front of a tube amp. Besides, the Bandit II and Classic 30 both have two-channel operation and reverb. You might get one of those, and decide that you want another effect, like delay, wah, etc.
If it was me, I'd get the Epi LP Studio and the Peavey Bandit II and a cheap delay. But that's just me. Figure out what there is out there, and the look, feel, and sound you want... examine your budget... let us know more about what you're looking for.
My advice. Go to a music shop. play everything they have at 300 bucks into a variety of amps and make up your own mind. It's the only way to be truely satisfied you bought the right one.
Amps for starters should run you between 80-200 bucks. you can up grade later. Most practice amps have a decent drive channel to start with so a distortion pedal isn't immediately necessary especially if the amp has a footswitch to swap channels.
Look for reverb and maybe a few other digital efx to play with.

A Crate DFX amp is probably the same price as the Epiphone and blows it away interms of quality. The guitar is ok, but you can probably get something similar at Guitar Center on a deal day for around 99 bucks. Spend money on the guitar first. You can buy an amp later.
