Put your tuner on the half step down setting, and tune to g

What tuner are you using? If it has a chromatic setting, put it on that and it should pick up the F#

Tune your G string to G while fretting it at the first (1st) fret.
That will make the G-string actually tuned to F# when open.

I tried this once, but got poor results because of the pressure required to fret cleanly at teh first fret. So much easier to have a chromatic tuner.

If you can't use your finger then try using a capo.
Goodness, if you can't fret the 1st fret how high is your action??? Also, if it's that difficult
to press the strings on the first fret, when's the last time you changed your strings???
What are you playing, a steel string acoustic with 10-year old strings??? :)

    Crappy huh? lol
I swear when I first looked at it I thought it said Fender at the top. hehe

    Oh for tuning...
    A couple ways...
fret the D string at the 4th fret and then (like you said you cant do it by ear)
just make it sound similar and use your tuner to refine it.
Or you can just have it hooked to you tuner and then pluck the string and just tune it down alittle bit (while the string is still resonating)
till' your tuner says its an F#. Hope that helps you!

    Good luck playing!

Should I so put a capo on the first fret and tune the G string accordingly and When I tune it with the capo on I should get the F# when I remove the capo

    YES . . . :)

Standard tuning with a capo on the 1st fret raises all notes up a 1/2 step, so F# up a half step is G (one fret).
If you place a capo on the 1st fret with a guitar tuned standard (E-A-D-G-B-e), the notes are (low to high) F-A#-D#-G#-C-F.
    Cheers . . .
