pre-amp for turntable

Is it necessary to have a built-in pre-amp? I don't know much about turntables, but I'm gonna start shopping for one soon. I'd prefer to buy a new one, but I've noticed a lot of the new ones don't have built in pre-amps. I'm wanting to run the turntable through the auxillary input on my stereo system. any help appreciated. thanks.

You should be able to get a preamp from eBay:

You will need a preamp somewhere in the line between the needle and your stereo. If your stereo doesn't have a preamp built in, and neither does the turntable, you'll need an external unit. They can be found, you just gotta look around....and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.0 -
