pre-amp for turntable

Is it necessary to have a built-in pre-amp? I don't know much about turntables, but I'm gonna start shopping for one soon. I'd prefer to buy a new one, but I've noticed a lot of the new ones don't have built in pre-amps. I'm wanting to run the turntable through the auxillary input on my stereo system. any help appreciated. thanks.

You will need a preamp somewhere in the line between the needle and your stereo. If your stereo doesn't have a preamp built in, and neither does the turntable, you'll need an external unit. They can be found, you just gotta look around.
