guitar recommendations

OK, I am going to start playing guitar. My best friend just got one and i've been having a lot of fun playing his, but would love to have my own so i can practice more and we can play together. I'm looking to spend around $200 for the guitar and to get a decent amp and would like some suggestions on what to buy. I have a few in mind, but would like to know what you guys think. thanks a lot for any help

I suggest you get a crappy acoustic first.. builds up the strength in your fingers.. that's what i should've done!

now i dunno about electric cos i've still got my old squire strat that i bought in a STRAT PAK .. i got a lil practice amp, guitar + accessories for AUD$500

The following are Fender Squire and Epiphone recommendations. Keep in mind that a good guitar isn't bought cheap. All of these options are economy options. You definitely won't get a good guitar and a good amp for this price. That being said, the Squire guitars are all decent, and can get that Fender sound pretty well. The quality of the wood used and the fit and finish are pretty cheap, but the electronics are okay and can be upgraded easily. The humbucking Squires will give you a chunkier sound than the regular Squires. The Epiphones are a good choice, too. Slightly better fit and finish, and the humbuckers are okay. Pretty simple guitars. You'll get the heaviest, chunkiest sounds out of the Epiphones. My recommendation: check the pawn shops and second-hand music stores in your area, see if there are any deals. If you can't find a great deal, get a cheap amp and a better guitar, then upgrade the amp when you have the money, then upgrade the guitar after that. Out of all these, I probably like the Epiphone SG-Special the best.

but i like the sg special too. i'll check out the music stores in the area and if i don't find anything i'll probably go with one of those two. i've been looking at this amp, is this ok for that amount of money or do you recommend somethin else?

Either guitar will work out for you. Just remember, you get what you pay for. The amp looks pretty good, too. Not great, but it'll get the job done. The headphone jack will be good for bedroom jamming.
