good to see fenders not going to be hurting selling these at 1954 prices.

yeah originals are $20,000 but they ain't that great.

How hard is putting a gun oil finish on an american deluxe strat neck?

That's the route I think I'm going. The new ASH American Deluxe.

I just want the 62 strat neck on it.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

  • So you are or aren't gonna buy that guitar?

I think it's a strat i would look into if I liked strats.

It is probably a decent investment too. I assume they will only make these for a year or 2.

no thanks on the U neck... I like a nice C, like on a 62 you mentioned.

G&L charges like a $250 upcharge for the gun oil finish, but it looks oh so nice.

    I would get a G&L before a Fender anyday.

No I'm between the new Ash American Deluxe a 62 RI or a Custom Shop 60's closet classic. THis is a collector guitar I'm a player.

yeah, me too. That's why I'll probably go with the American Deluxe. I just want that vintage gun oil finish on the neck.

have you ever played a G&L? the fullerton is a great old strat type guitar... but the legacy can be had with gunoil for like $1200 I think...

I don't think that is a lot more than an american deluxe.

oh yes, I love G&L. I can just never find exactly the one I want.

How great looking is that Blues Boy? See why I want the Gun Oil?

  • I have a G&L legacy and it is a great strat. The one thing that I was skeptical of, and came true was the micro tilt neck. It's 3 screws holding the neck on, and it all rides on a pivot that you can adjust the whole neck tilt. It sucked the tone away, and never was that solid. I played hard with that one, and didn't like it. I finally took it off, and glue a maple shim on the neck joint to make a solid connection and put 4 screws in and it sounded way better.
The newer ones don't have that micro tilt. I would check first. Other than that, it's a great player.
Paco, you could sand off the neck finish and do gun oil! It ain't that hard!
Pina Colada, sandpaper , gun oil.

so it's not that hard eh? Maybe I should go with the cheaper one and do it myself. I love everything about the American Deluxe but the neck.

so where do you get "gun oil?"

I refinished the neck on my tele, I used some dark wood stain and light poly finish...

it was not as dark as the gun oil tint...

The fingerboard is a bit harder, and risker to loosen the frets up, but the back of the neck, not hard at all.
Or buy an unfinished neck and get some sandpaper and 0000 steel wool and finish it yourself.
I friend and I that I made some guitars had some necks that were too fat for us .
We glued sand paper to some fingerless gloves and played the guitars (with Jack Daniels), laughing for a couple of hours, until we liked the neck size. ( with gloves off!) then kind of finished up the sanding and oiled them up.

Tru Oil is the name of one brand. Probably find it in a Sporting Goods store where ever guns are sold. It gets hand rubbed light coat by light coat.

Stewmac.com might have it, they have everything for instruments. Definitely get that catalog anyway as it has tons of tips in it for guitar fixing and building.

Did the JD lubricate the neck, or the player?

I cried when some was wasted by spilling on the neck!

The gun oil didn't taste too bad either!

    How about Lemon Oil...

Then you can condition the fretboard at the same time!

That would have been a good idea. I knew I was in trouble when I started rubbing MY neck with the oil instead of the guitar neck.
You wouldn't believe what the guitar smells like now:D
