Future Days Fund: Community Jams
Please join us in congratulating Community Jams, the recipient of October’s Future Days Fund! Based in Portland, connecting musicians of different backgrounds, abilities, and life experiences through interactive live music is the mission of Community Jams. Nominating 10C member Deena B. shares:
Last year, Jeff Ament inspired me to learn the bass. I've been taking lessons but I really wanted to meet and play with other musicians. My daughter found Community Jams on Meetup and it's changed my life. I attend jam sessions nightly and on weekends because jams are themed based on genre; blues, funk. There are even acoustic only jams for those who don't "plug in".
Attending these jams nightly has incredibly improved my playing. I've moved off of tabs and am completely arpeggiating because of their song database. The BSteele database (check it out!) was created by Bob Steele, another long time bass player in the group. In this very accepting environment, I'm learning to sing and play at the same time. I've made friends and real social connections because this group has taught me the idea of having "no fear" when singing and playing in large groups.
