Vedder Cup Trophy Rocks the Ballpark
News September 12 2025

The Seattle Mariners clinched the first-ever official Vedder Cup title after 6 games against the San Diego Padres in May and August of this year in support of EB Research Partnership. Equipment manager and in-house technician George explains how the tournament and its unique trophy came to be…

Over the off season, [Trevor Gooby - Mariners Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer] approached our organization with a request to see if we could make the Vedder Cup an official thing ‘cause Major League Baseball (MLB) wanted to have more rivalry matches between teams.

Ed gave his blessing on it and really wanted to have a personal input on the trophy that would be awarded to the winning teams every year. So the idea is that we've created a one-of-a-kind guitar based on a 1963 Fender Telecaster, which resembles the same Telecaster that Ed plays. This guitar will go back and forth between the teams every year, and we have places here for the teams to engrave their team logos, the year, and the season matchup.

I know Ed would like to see it played. That was one of the things when he - I shouldn't understate this - when he wanted to design a trophy, he knows a lot of MLB players and that a lot of them are musicians as well… he's always wanted to encourage people to be creative and play instruments. So, he wanted to make something that potentially could live in the team's clubhouse during the season and be played by the players and appreciated and used. He doesn't want it to be just a hang on the wall trophy piece. He wants it to be played. It's a living, breathing instrument. It sounds great.”
