You might know him as the best bass player from Big Sandy, but Jeff Ament has a lot more on his resume. He joined MTPR's John Floridis for a two-part interview to talk about some of that other work – building more than 35 skate parks in Montana, the power of community and the joy of making all kinds of music.

Tune in to Musician's Spotlight on your radio or online, Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Montana Public Radio.

Finishing the final edits tonight for part two of our Musician’s Spotlight with @officialament of @pearljam @deafcharlie, Mother Love Bone and several other groups. This second half airs tonight, Tuesday, August 5th at 7pm on @mtpublicradio and focuses on Jeff’s solo recordings, how he started writing songs, the process behind his collaboration with @johnwicksdrums, and Josh Klinghoffer on scoring the TV series “Under the Banner of Heaven,” his work with @montanapoolservice creating skate parks across Montana, his death bed song choice and how he and I both simply sucked at playing the video game guitar hero. Tune in and hang out with us tomorrow night on MTPR!

    It was a great listen!

They talked about his side projects:
    they played voices from Heaven/Hell
they played Noise, Noise from I should be outside
they played corduroy in the beginning of the show
They played a song from Under the banner of heaven

They talked about MPS and their origins
They talked about his trip to California when he was young, where he got a copy of skateboarder magazine.
They talked about how JA goes to the skateparks and enjoys seeing how they are becoming a place for people to meet and bond over skateboarding.

Fun Facts I didn’t know that they shared:
    - JA shows up randomly at the skateparks and hands out gear to kids that don’t have the best quality stuff.

    - JA got into songwriting early on when he was being harassed by USA forces to convince him to join.

    - JA isn’t a fan of guitar hero, Pearl Jam was approached by Guitar Hero to create a Pearl Jam extension pack. He didn’t mention the specific song but it’s one he wrote, he was testing it out and he didn’t like how guitar hero was kind of faking the motions of guitar playing. He was glad that opportunity didn’t materialize. I think the company went bankrupt. I’m guessing it was something off of ten? I am hoping it was Pilate.

    - JA deathbed song is Across the Universe by the Beatles, but did mention that if he knew he was going to die from an illness most likely, he would prep a playlist.

    - JA had a great time making the soundtrack to Under the Banner of Heaven. He really liked how he was given 100% creative freedom. He did say that he enjoyed it so much that he would do it full time but it’s difficult to find a television company that would allow 100% creative freedom.

They didn’t talk about pearl jam at all.

Thank you! Hopefully they will add both interviews on the website soon.

Maybe not, I mean it was on Montana public radio. I tuned in early and they discuss everything about Montana etc. To have the spotlight on him and his projects that he brings to Montana that was the point. I think the deathbed question was one that the host asks every person. Can’t remember how they got into guitar hero

I will post on @mtpublicradio when this is up as a podcast. Thanks for asking!

Thanks so much for the conversation Jeff. As you said, it was a long time coming for both of us. Really enjoyed adding the solo stuff, Deaf Charlie and the soundtrack work!
