Yay, although I still think eventually I might want to upgrade the Output Transformer.

luckily it was a preamp tube. The pins were too big and it wasn't fully pushed in even though it felt like it was initially. Good stuff.

my bet is it's the new Tung Sol.

User error, so my pride is damaged, but that's no real injury :D
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

yes, excellent. Planet Waves Ronco (set it and forget it) style lockers. they even cut off the excess for you.

Oh, and a Lava cable PB kit.

Pickups I could get now too if I want, I might let Acme do it for me because I want that blender pot. I think. Have you ever installed one of those?

the blender? it's easy. just a linear pot and a couple connections. if you get fancy you get the pot with a switch so when it's off it's really off.

i did it once. intended to do it again when i redid my strat but never got around to it. so i have one dead knob and master volume/tone.

of course, it took me two hours to re-wire and fish all the controls back into my casino last night so maybe i'm not the guy to ask :D

Yeah, I hear that is interesting. How did you go about that? Or maybe that's a different thread :D

well, i built the new harness outside of the guitar using relatively stiff cloth covered wire.....

ran string in through each hole and out the f hole using more wire as a fishing rod.

tied each string to each pot and the output jack, stuffed it all into the body and yanked on the lines.

then did it all over again when i realized i forgot to take the bolts and washers off the pots first. :o

the only part that was a bitch was the output jack. impossible tighten as much as i'd like because it just twisted with the bolt and it's too far in to reach and hold in place. so i probably twisted up the wire going from the pickup switch to the jack as i tightened it.

but everything works. and it's nice and clean now. no ugly red, grey and blue wire visible from the outside. the plastic plugs (!!!!!!) that epiphone uses to hook their pickups to the rest of the harness are gone. umm, it's a guitar, not a car stereo.

it's still noisy. there is no way to shield that guitar. but it's all switchcraft, CTS and orange drops now. i still like the sound of the pickups outside of the hum so no replacements are in the works right now.

i wired it as two independent volumes rather than two masters to help balance the pickups a bit better. the neck pickup is way too hot in comparison to the bridge. i don't have a multimeter to check impedance but i think, like gibson 57s, the neck and bridge are the same value. it's really pronounced in this guitar though. moreso than the dot.

    other glitches:
-the holes for the pots were too small for the shafts of the CTS pots. so out came the drill for some minor expansion.
-the pointer rings didn't fit the new pots so i have to find gibson ones or something.
-there's a freaking wire holder tab thingy stuck inside the body that i can't get out. they use it to hold the massive bundle of extra wire these things have from the factory.

also, it's getting somewhat lennonized so the pickguard is off. i don't think i'll go with gold grovers though. i may put new grover vintage deluxes on it but:

    - it involves getting the push in bushings from the stock tuners out. i can't get them out myself.
    - expanding the holes
    - repairing all the current screw holes since the tuners appear to have been installed by a drunk. they're all crooked and it aggravates my OCD.
    - so it's a pro job that i can't undertake myself.

the carelessness in the tuner installation is my biggest beef with MIK epiphones. looks like a 3 year old lined them up.

speaking of OCD, the footswitch died in mine so i had to put in a new blue 3PDT. there goes my resale value. good thing i like it.
