Grateful request: Hard To Imagine in Pittsburgh
This is my first and likely only song request after 100+ shows.
I remember hoping to hear it played at my second show - in Pittsburgh - knowing it was going to be released on the Chicago Cab soundtrack the same day as Pearl Jam played Pittsburgh in 1998 (August 25th).
I also remember hoping to hear it played at my 100th show in London, night 1, 2018. I’m not sure Ed could read the sign with the lights but I tossed it to him at the end of the night thinking maybe night 2. Unfortunately, that show was postponed a few weeks and I had to get back home to real life by then.
My story isn’t unique, but the fact that it’s likely common among us fans is what makes it so special.
My first show was Randall’s Island night 2 1996. I didn’t know it then but it changed the trajectory of my life. Working at a concert amphitheater I had seen so many bands perform, going through the motions per se, and playing and saying the same things every night. Pearl Jam was so immediately different (Ed spoke before the band played a note), their performance was something so genuine and real, I knew they were different, and I was hooked.
I eventually met a group of people from all over the world who have become real friends that I regularly stay in contact with to this day.
Friends from Scotland and England, Australia and New Zealand, Venezuela and Canada, and many from the states.
A bunch of us travelled across Canada in an RV in 2005 in what felt like a reality show, as I was a stranger to all but one of them, and now we find ourselves reminiscing in a group chat about those memories 20 years later.
If I had known then what I know now, twenty-one year old me just wouldn’t believe that my love of the music would connect me with life long friends from around the world, have me travel and see the world, see it all, it’s just Hard to Imagine.
I am truly grateful and blessed for all the music has done for me in my life and just wanted to say thank you again. - Brian
