How to find a band to join?

For those of you that are in bands, how did you join it? Or did you start it? I'm looking to get into a band, but it'll be my first time (I'm in my late 20's too, so finding a bunch of guys at school won't work) and I'm not sure what the best way to go about it is. I've put a message out on a couple of boards but, should I start hitting stores looking for the bulletin boards too? (not sure if I've seen many lately)
Thanks for any advice

  • I should probably mention that I'm in that ever expanding pool of guitarists.

It's sort of like dating, but with a smaller population to choose from, and no bars specifically for finding drummers. Ask around, post messages, and good luck. It's a combination of the three.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

I met all of the guys in my band in high school, so we've all kinda known each other for awhile...

I'd put up ads or something... I don't know though, there are a few avenues you could take...

    I'm in the same boat.

I would say look at bulletin boards at local music shops and go to local music gigs. You're sure to meet people there. It's something I need to do, but it's bound to be worth a try.

work extra hours and holidays at a music store, ask around.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • Just take it slow. How's your local music scene? Go see some bands play and talk with some people. Also, don't be in a hurry to start a band, record a CD, go on tour, rule the world, etc. Just find some people to jam with and things will naturally progress.
    yankees suck
  • Since this would be my first time around, I really just want to find a group to jam with, play some R.E.M., and Pearl Jam covers, and maybe write a couple of songs and go from there. Eventually play in a couple of bars, probably as a cover band first, then go off and rule the world! ; )

That sounds like me to a tee. Late 20's and wanting to join a band (have wanted to for like 8 years).

    Too bad you're in AZ!
Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
  • I'm 27 and I just joined my first band over the summer. I hadn't even jammed with anyone prior to that, and I've been playing guitar for almost 10 years. We're doing pretty good, turning down gigs left and right because we just don't have a lot of material yet.
Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, it should be pretty easy to hook up with someone.

I too want to find a band to join, or just some like-minded dudes to jam with. I just moved to Whittier, California and I'm 26, don't know anyone here. Let me know if you fit the profile.

I think we need singles bars for musicians...
