jazzmaster tremolo question

I will shortly be the owner of a usa 62 jazzmaster, went to the music store today to look at it (moving house so picking it up next week) and had a fiddle with the tremolo.

so my question is.....

does that slidy button totally stop you pulling the bar out or does it just grip it firmly to stop it slipping out? didnt want to force it too much before I paid for it....

    It does neither. It just prevents the tremolo from... tremoloing too far... blah... bah. I don't know how to put this. I'm tired. Canadians, Brits, yanks, Aussies... ANYONE...help me out here.
